Introduction

Although the basic idea of this exhibition was to see, on annual show, new ceramic works of art, made by forty members of the Croatian Ceramic Association KERAMEIKON  ( members are mostly from Varazdin and Zagreb, but also from other parts of Croatia, as well as from abroad which gives the exhibition a sort of international character ), with the invitation of all the other ceramists who feel like being  KERAMEIKON friends, it turned out to be, after a lot of interest  and after selection, a small review of contemporary Croatian ceramics. Review that allowed every ceramist to participate, but to enter for a selection with the only criteria – artistic approach. The final result was more interesting, because all the authors (not only Croatian, but also those from other countries) – from famous professional artists of older generation, to young ones, as well as those who work with clay only for a short time, let their imagination fly and through their art send a really powerful visual message. Because of the medium – pliable, primordially suggestive and everlasting attractive, from pre-historical times to today, in all places and all geographical areas in the world, this message is, written as an exhibition as a whole, very strong and very communicative. The most important, understandable to everyone, in spite of many individualities and many authors’ approaches, methods and concepts, many various ceramic treatments and many creatively seeing things. And those creatively seeing things go here from pure traditional ceramics utility, to sculpturallity
and ambience; from narrative to metaphoric, synthetic and lapidary expressions; from paint decorativeness, to rusticallity, structurallity  and materiality. Likewise, from usual artistic reflections and sensations, installations and art interventions, as well as new ceramic transformations, that move the earlier attention from the form and surface, or volume and composition, to substance and structure, concept and idea, space and ambience, motion and time. And also to happening. But it must be admitted that all these elements of expression can be found today almost in all art branches, so they do not skip neither ceramics. Still, companionship with clay, in spite of all various art consideration levels and concepts, at the end always give in this medium specific and different results. And this exhibition is the clear evidence.
